For people who have completed their 2010/11 Self Assessment tax return and are due to pay tax to HMRC by 31st January 2012, there are a number of ways that you can pay.

Details of how to pay HMRC can be found on their website:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/payinghmrc/selfassessment.htm

If you are required to give your Self Assessment reference, this is your UTR (Unique Tax Reference) and is shown on the payslip HMRC has sent you and is located in the reference box. It is made up of 10 digits followed by a letter.

If you have not been sent a payslip, you can print off a Self Assessment payment slip if you are paying by post at the following web link:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/payinghmrc/payslip-sa.htm

Ways to be able to pay HMRC for Self-Assessment tax are:

- Direct Debit

You need to be registered for Self Assessment Online to be able to pay by Direct Debit.

- Debit or credit card over the internet (BillPay)

This takes 3 working days to clear. HMRC do not accept American Express or Diners Club cards. A transaction fee of 1.4% is added if paid by credit card.

- Internet or telephone banking

Select 'HM Revenue & Customs' from your bank/building society's payee list, or use HMRC's bank account details to set up a manual instruction. Enter your Self Assessment reference and the payment amount.

HMRC now accepts Faster Payments (FPS) which allows for a quicker transaction between bank accounts.

Please take time to make sure you pay to the correct HMRC bank account as HMRC closed some bank accounts in August 2011.
Refer to the back of your payment reminder to check which of the Accounts Offices is relevant to you. If you are unsure which Accounts Office you should pay to, use the Cumbernauld details.

Accounts Office: Cumbernauld
Sort Code: 083210
Account Number: 12001039
Account Name: HMRC Cumbernauld

Accounts Office: Shipley
Sort Code: 083210
Account Number: 12001020
Account Name: HMRC Shipley

If your bank asks for the address of the bank to which payment is being made, it is the following:
Citi
Citigroup Centre
Canada Square
Canary Wharf
London
E14 5LB

- Giro Credit and at the Post Office

Take your HMRC payslip to you own bank and make your cheque payable to 'HM Revenue & Customs only'. Write your Self Assessment reference number on the back of the cheque. Allow 3 working days for this to clear.
